I didn't interpret this as poor acting though, but rather an active stylistic choice. I agree with critics that the kids deliver a lot of their lines in a vaguely unnatural, wooden fashion - especially longer or more in-depth conversations. While it isn't as though everyone is completely trashing them, there's definitely a general sentiment of 'they're wooden child actors who could stand to be better.' On the contrary, I though their performances were excellent and just wanted to throw my two cents in. I've seen a fair bit of criticism of Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes' performances.
